My why...

I believe education has the power to transform lives. This belief comes from my mother, who fostered my love of learning. Growing up, my mother was the most intelligent person I knew. She read to me at night, taught me how to manage my time, and helped me with my homework.

It was a shock to discover she was a teenage mom and gave birth to me three weeks before her 17th birthday. I was an adult when I realized she left school at such a young age, got married, waited until I was born, and moved to California.

In 6th grade, my mother returned to school and started taking classes at a community college. Tirelessly, she worked during the day, attended school at night, and raised three children. Within 3 years, she completed her GED and obtained her A.A. degree, graduating with honors. Her tenacity and commitment to education are why I became a teacher.

I have spent more than 25 years in education, educational administration, and literacy. I bring my expertise to this next phase. Young people deserve access to literacy skills and resources that allow each uninhibited access to the world around them.

The routine of being read to each night positively impacted my academic development. Unfortunately, my mother did not witness me start my business. Sadly, she passed away in April 2020. I am comforted and draw energy because I can still hear her voice as she reads Winnie the Pooh, "It isn't much good having anything exciting if you can't share it with somebody."
