Our Methodology &   Approach to Education

We use M.U.D. in our approach to literacy instruction (ASU. 2001). The lessons we teach are:

  • Memorable- We make information stick and fun with games, music, reader's theater, and movement.

  • Usable-We help students connect learning to various disciplines and life skills.

  • Durable-We make sure what is taught has significance to students.

1. Phonemic Awareness and Phonics Instruction

Phonemic awareness is the ability to count the number of sounds in a word. Example (the word "bakery" b...a...k...ree...has 4 sounds)

Phonics instruction is when a student writes each letter they hear to spell a word. Ex. a learner would spell the word "school" as (s...k...oo...l)

2. Reading Comprehension and Reading Fluency

Reading Comprehension is the ability to understand and gain meaning from the information we read. Reading Fluency is when a student can decode words they see in a text and read the information smoothly and with expression. Fluency is usually determined by the number of words a learner can read per minute.

3. Writing and Vocabulary Development

Students expand their ability to communicate ideas through writing. As your child strengthens their reading skills, their writing capacity also improves.

Vocabulary development is crucial to reading comprehension. When learners interact with a variety of words it prepares them to use academic language in school. Fortunately,...."ability to understand concepts quickly increase. (Vaughn, Bos, Schumm, 2006).

4. Critical Thinking Skills

We engage in discussions and analyze a variety of reading content. Students learn to communicate in ways that inform, persuade, and entertain.
